MNC TV Promises Not to Use a Protected Wildlife in Their Program

MNC, the parent company of several national televisions such as Global TV, RCTI, and MNC TV, promises not use a protected wildlife in their programs or shows. The official statement was expressed during a meeting with ProFauna Indonesia and other NGOs on 11th September 2012 at the office in Jakarta. Previously on 8th July 2012, ProFauna Indonesia and the other NGOs reported the company for allegedly abuse of a slow loris in the series named Aladin aired in MNC TV. ProFauna's report received positive response from MNC by inviting the organization for a meeting. In the meeting, MNC which was represented by Nurbaiti (Acquisition), Syarifudin Kurdi (Program Officer), Olda Simatupang (Legal), Hermawan and Sofyan (Legal Staff); stated that the company had not been aware before if the slow loris was a protected species and there was a law regulation the use of such species. They admitted that they did not know if there was a regulation concerning widlife.

Following the case, MNC promised to scrutinize their programs or shows featuring wildlife. In addition, they also stated that they would not use a protected wildlife anymore. After the meeting, the company contacted ProFauna Indonesia office to request copies of the protected wildlife book and ProFauna was glad to send them the copies.

ProFauna Indonesia applauds MNC's goog will to pay attention on the use of wildlife in their television programs or shows. Irma Hermawati, ProFauna's advocate, stated, "We hope that MNC promise will change into real action so that there will be no more shows exploiting wildlife. We also hope that other television stations will have the same policy".
