Thousands of Turtle Eggs Confiscated in East Borneo

In early May, an effort to smuggle 1.880 eggs from Bau-Bau, Southeast Sulawesi, to East Borneo via Semayang harbor Balikpapan, was foiled. Last week, a dealer in Samarinda got arrested before he started the business, and 500 eggs was confiscated.

In the world, there are seven sea turtle species, six of which live in Indonesia: Green turtle (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate), olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), flatback sea turtle (Natator depressus), and loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

ProFauna's investigation in January 2012 uncovers dozens of souvenirs like bracelet, jewelry box, and cigarette pipe, which are made from the protected hawksbill turtle, were sold in Pulau Penyu (Sea Turtle Island) in Tanjung Benoa, Bali. The prices were 250,000 IDR for each bracelet, a cigarette pipe for 300,000 IDR, and a jewelry box for 1 million IDR.
