Training on Sea Turtle Egg Relocation on Perancak Beach - Bali

ProFauna Indonesia held training on sea turtle conservation management for a local community called "Kurma Asih" on Perancak Beach, Bali last Saturday, 1st December 2012. In the informal training, ProFauna team consisting of Drh. (Vet) Wita Wahyudi, Rosek Nursahid, and Jatmiko Wiwoho, spoke about the general guidelines on sea turtle egg relocation. Mrs. Wahyudi said that the relocation should be done immediately after four to six hours the eggs were laid. It should not be over than 12 hours because the percentage of the eggs to hatch will be less.

Participants of the local community were excited to follow the training. They also shared their experiences in managing the sea turtle conservation on Perancak Beach which they have performed since 1997. The local community is now working together with ProFauna Indonesia to better manage the sea turtle conservation on the beach.

The training taking place under shade trees was also attended by some officials of the Natural Resources Conservation Center of the Forestry Department, village municipalities, police officers, and ProFauna's local volunteers in Bali. Rosek Nursahid, chairman of ProFauna Indonesia, stated, "ProFauna has been working on sea turtle conservation issues since 1999 and assisting a local community on Kuta Beach. It is now the time for ProFauna to work together with Kurma Asih to protect the sea turtles on Perancak Beach." Nursahid added, "ProFauna greatly supports a wildlife conservation programme involving local communities because they are valuable resources to protect the nature".

After the training, the team then set up some information boards of sea turtle conservation on the beach. The boards which were supported by the Born Free Foundation, were officially launched by the Forestry Department, management team of Kurma Asih, and Rosek Nursahid. Anom, one of the Kurma Asih team members stated, "We are thankful and welcome ProFauna for the partnership. We have known ProFauna for so long and looked forward to working together with it".
