ProFauna Brings a Charge against Man Flaunting Illegal Primate Hunting Photos on Facebook

ProFauna Indonesia brings charges against the owner of a Facebook account named Ozzy Syahputra Muhammad Akbar to the West Java Police for illegally hunting the Javan Leaf-monkey and the leopard Cat. It all started from the horrendous photos of his hunting trophies uploaded on his Facebook account which triggered massive rage among thousands other users, including ProFauna's supporters.

In the report filed to the police by Radius Nursidi, ProFauna's West java representatives, on 13 March 2014 ProFauna urges the police to investigate the illegal hunting. Radius claimed, "The act of hunting endangered wildlife species which are publicly displayed, in this case on the social network, are likely to encourage other people to do the same crime. This is a serious threat for our biodiversity!"

According to the Law no. 5 of 1990 Concerning the Conservation of Living Resources and Their Ecosystems, hunting, trading, and keeping a protected wildlife species without permission is a form of violation and whoever breaks this law shall be liable to punishment by imprisonment up to a maximum of 5 years and a fine up to a maximum of IDR 100 million. "ProFauna appeals to the police to crack down this illicit act, by enforcing the prevailing law, to give a wary effect to the doers," Radius affirmed.
