Focusing on Forest and Wildlife Issues, PROFAUNA Opens New Office in Borneo

After years of working in many issues in Borneo, finally Protection of Forest and Fauna (PROFAUNA) officially opens new office of "PROFAUNA BORNEO PROGRAM" in Tanjung Redeb, Berau, East Borneo. The program started this September will work mainly in forest and wildlife issues in Borneo.

"In addition to our deep concern towards forest-related problems, we also take wildlife issues -such as primates, sunbear, sea turtle, and hornbills- seriously because they have been threatened with extinction," said Bayu Sandi, the coordinator of PROFAUNA Borneo Program.

In performing the programs, PROFAUNA Borneo Program collaborates with local community groups. "One of PROFAUNA's policy is to work closely with local people who share the same apprehension of the importance of forest and wildlife protection. One of our current partner is the customary institution of dayak Wehea Nehas Liah Bing," Bayu added.

Prior to opening the new office, actually PROFAUNA has been doing a lot of works in Borneo, from forest campaign in Kapuas, as well as sea turtle, sunbear, and primate campaigns. "PROFAUNA's presence in Borneo can be traced back to 1999 when PROFAUNA held a campaign about the protection of the Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) in South Borneo," explained Rosek Nursahid, the founder and chairman of PROFAUNA Indonesia.

He then added, "By establishing a new program in Borneo, we hope that PROFAUNA could work more intensively on protecting the forest and wildlife of Borneo. As a public support-based organization, PROFAUNA is surely open to any local community group who would like to join forces with us."
