Activist from Different Cities Talked Forest Conservation at P-WEC

Around 100 environmental activists from all across Indonesia gathered at Petungsewu Wildlife Education Center (P-WEC), Petungsewu village, Dau, Malang, to attend PROFAUNA Conference 2015 on 14 August. The event's theme was 'Speak Out for Forest'. The attendants  came from East Java, West Java, Central Java, South Borneo, East Borneo, West Borneo, Bali, Jakarta, Jambi, and Lampung.

To intensify the discussion, PROFAUNA also invited several speakers who are practitioners in forest conservation: Darmawan Liswanto (Flora Fauna International/FFI), Rosek Nursahid (Protection of Forest & Fauna/PROFAUNA), Yatim (Customary Institution of Dayak Wehea), Yusup Cahyadin (Restorasi Ekosistem Indonesia), and Rustam (Mulawarman University).

Not only the event was attended by PROFAUNA's activist, but also from NGOs, nature conservation clubs, government officials, workers, and indigenous people. This occasion was expected to be a great opportunity to exchange information and experience for those who are concerned about forest conservation.

"The deforestation in Indonesia is going at an alarming rate. Approximately, there is only 82 million hectares of natural forest left in the country. Therefore, it takes active participation from all walks of life in protecting the remaining forest," said Rosek Nursahid, the founder of PROFAUNA Indonesia.

PROFAUNA Conference 2015 has become a priceless opportunity for the activists to improve their knowledge and network. "We hope that this event can inspire them to conduct independent activities to protect forests around their residences," added him.

After the conference, around 35 PROFAUNA's activists will continue to PROFAUNA Camp to get a deeper understanding and discuss further some major problems faced by forest conservation. During the camp will held on 15-17 August 2015, the activists will also receive an intensive training on campaign and advocacy in relation to forest protection.
