5 Parrots Regain Freedom

Officers of the Natural Resource Conservation Agency of Bacan Obi Resort, North Maluku, under the assistance of Protection of Forest and Fauna (PROFAUNA) released 5 parrots back to their natural habitat in Bacan, South Halmahera on 20 September 2014. Among the parrots released were 2 Eclectus Parrots (Eclectus roratus) and 3 Chattering Lories (Lorius garrulus).

The birds were rescued by the officers from illegal poachers and dealers. After being quarantined, and considered safe because  it has not been long since they were captured from the wild, the officer decided to release the parrots immediately.

In the last 3 months, PROFAUNA and the Natural Resource Conservation Agency have been doing intensive monitoring on parrot trade in North Maluku. In September 2014, PROFAUNA notes tha at least 104 parrots has been traded and are being kept as pets. Among the parrots are the White Cockatoo, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Chattering Lori, Eclectus Parrot, and Violet-necked Lori.

The coordinator of PROFAUNA's Ternate chapter, Eka Ka'aba said "The illegal trade and ownership of parrots in North Maluku is reaching an alarming rate. Therefore, PROFAUNA works hard in educating the general public as well as providing assistance for the officers in enforcing the law."
